Question
I'm working on the Eesti Trail Hiking Socks (page 97). What do they mean by a 'reinforcing thread'? I tried adding the two colors together but decided it was too bulky and that would bother me in a pair of hiking boots. I frogged what I had done and am making it without the reinforcement but would like to know for a future pattern.

Reinforcing thread is a thin, usually nylon, thread that you hold together with your main working yarn when you knit the heels and toes. Nylon makes these spots more resistant to wear (which is why many sock yarn have some nylon in the blend). However, you can do just fine without the reinforcing thread.
In any case, however, you do not want to hold the main yarn double!
