What Am I Doing Wrong?

I am working on my second sock in the Retro Rib pattern and I made the same 'mistake' that I made in the first and I'm wondering what I am doing wrong.

The instruction for the heel flap on page 10 should leave you with 30 stitches on the heel flap and 34 stitches to be worked later for the instep. The instep to be worked later should have 16 stitches on needle 2 and 18 stitches on needle 3. The instep pattern then begins by purling 2 on needle 2 and ends with purling 2 on needle 3.

I always end up with 17 stitches on needle 2 and 17 stitches on needle 3 and must begin the instep by knitting one on needle 2 and end with a purl one on needle 3 in order to keep the pattern.

So, what am I doing wrong in that first paragraph under the heading of 'Heel Flap'? I know that is where I am making my mistake. It doesn't really matter as far as how the sock turns out. It's easy enough to adjust the instep pattern, but it's driving me crazy!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Karolee, I faced the same problem as you do. I decided for myself that the instruction was wrong. If you start the heel flap with K16 instead of K15 everything else turns out perfectly. The instep pattern later on will start and end with two purl stitches and be evenly balanced.

Good luck! Gisela
